History:

One of the first joints to open in Vegas in 1906, the Golden Gate has seen its share of Vegas History roll past its front doors. Opened 20 years before Fremont Street received its first treatment of blacktop, the 'Gate is a delightfully tiny but filled to the gills with class joint.

The first phone in Las Vegas was at the Golden Gate... dial 1.
The Golden Gates owner made a spoof of the famous Wynn Las Vegas TV ad which can be seen here

The Real Deal on Golden Gate:

If comfort and personality are qualities you endear, than the Golden Gate is for you. It's quite easy to miss and dismiss this smaller Downtown Carpet joint, but once you've been in and explored it, its impossible to forget.

The Casino at Golden Gate

400 slot machines tucked away in every nook of the joint, Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Caribbean Stud, Let It Ride and more...

The Rooms at Golden Gate

Small, charming... kinda like a bed and breakfast with slot machines downstairs.

The Restaurants at Golden Gate

A mainstay of the Golden Gate is its world famous Shrimp Coctail which appeared in 1959, a celebration in 1991 trumpeted the 25,000,000th shrimp coctail served. The original price was a whopping .50 (its now .99 the deluxe version for $2.99) The Steakhouse offers a monstrous 16 oz steak as well.

Great Vibe at night and the Craps dealers really get into the game!
DuPars is a hidden gem , don't miss that place!

I've been playing here since before it was cool. Back in the day, grandmothers who called everbody "hon" would bring you drinks before you needed a refill.

These days, it is pretty cool with dancing dealers and pit bosses in retro suits. They have great craps crews, the kind who make sure you are playing the odds and keep everything fun.

The old rooms are pretty small, but the new suites are nice, even if the bathrooms are a compromise.

It amuses me that anyone is still in Las Vegas Club when they could stumble a few steps and be here instead.

Probably the classiest downtown joint, and every time I went in was a good experience, whether it was for a quick or long gamble or just for food or drinks. Though many of the dealers at the tables were still new, they were very friendly and only added to the good experience. Everything in the casino was excellent - still 3/2 blackjack, good craps, good roulette, and drink service was quick, just as with the sister property The D. This will be one of the places on my short list to stay at my next trip here.

December '14 Update: All blackjack tables now use automatic shufflers (but has not yet happened at The D) - something I never really liked.

Summer 2015 Update: Stayed here for a couple nights on a comp. The room was small and not much to write home about, but for such an old building, I'd be willing to set that aside. Still one of the best gambles downtown nonetheless.

Dino and Frank drank here. That's good enough for me.

Low table limits and skanky dancers, don't get any better than that

New "high limit" blackjack room is pretty great.

I love love love the new Golden Gate. The energy on the casino floor gets your blood going and the new room designs (particularly the suites) are spectacularly sexy. My new favorite joint.

The first place I have ever stayed downtown. They do a good job on trying to make old rooms as current as possible. 3:2 blackjack makes me happy.

Love playing here, not too crowded, beautiful dealers, good 3:2 odds on BJ. Just wish they didn't use continuous shuffle machines.

Really like gambling here. Small and intimate but with an old school vibe. The dealers at the Craps table can be a little loud, reminded me of the Russian Roulette scene in Deer Hunter the last time I was there. The deli in the back is a great deal, always get the Shrimp Cocktail and the Homestyle Meat Loaf, wash it down quickly with a cheap beer= Vegas Heaven.

Rooms have been remodeled and now have HDTVs although no HD connection..bathrooms are tiny...windows open up a bit to the outside allowing fresh air inside..beds are comfy although small..
Casino can be rocking at night...girls are dancing in the table game pit to 70s and 80s Sirus XM Channels that are piped in..food at the two locations on the property is excellent..a trip to Vegas is not complete for me without a shrimp cocktail...

Always have fun with the dealers here, they really make the place shine. Plus, I got to play BJ with a John Glenn look alike!

One of my favorites spots to hang out at Downtown and where I've stayed at the most. DuPar's is still my go-to breakfast and late night spot Downtown.

I have never stayed at the Golden Gate....pretty sure I never will. But every time I make the trip to Las Vegas, I have to go here. The cheap Roulette and Black Jack can not be beat. Staggering out of the Golden Gate at 2:00 am, after playing Roulette for an hour with the same $20 is the best.

Getting woke up by the Fremont Street experience every hour on the hour rocks. Who needs an alarm clock? The valet actually washed our filthy Bronco. UPDATED: Really like what Derek Stevens ans his team have done with the joint! The rooms are upadated except the washrooms. Du'Par's is a great addition. Have stayed twice now in the new suites and they are awesome!!

My first hotel, back when I was a Vegas Virgin. Paid $15 a nite for it, looked right out just under the Freemont Puppet Show. We didn't know what was going on when it started, I was asleep and thought the world was ending. Nice room, cheap, good location if yer into old skool.

Old Vegas fo shizay! It was way cool hanging out at this joint. Had a real old western gambling hall feel. It was kind dead when we were there, but it was 2:30AM on a Monday morning.

YUMMY FOOD! Good odds on the slots.

Not fancy but has old-time style. Maybe the best diner on Fremont Street. Live pianists singing old standards at the snack bar in the back. They are great; don't forget to tip!
